Life in the Time of Coronavirus | Ivan's Story

In a bid to bring a more global perspective to the Coronavirus, I have been very lucky to get the stories of my friends, and how the outbreak is affecting them where they are.

First up, we're hearing from Ivan Wang, who has been in lockdown since the end of January in Wuhan, China - where the virus was first reported. Ivan has been in lockdown since January and only in recent days have Wuhan announced that they are slowly reducing quarantine measures

When did you first hear about Coronavirus? Were you worried?

I first heard about coronavirus on January 1st this year, where infections in the Huanan Seafood Market were first reported. Yes, I was concerned.

When did you go into lockdown?

We went into lockdown on January 23rd 2020.

What has daily life been like for you since you went into lockdown?

There has been a lot of anxiety due to the real threat of the virus and the related uncertainty about life.
It has taken a lot of patience to accept this fact. Later on, one needed to compromise with the situation, making the best of it and re-establishing a daily routine.

What have you done to keep yourself in good spirits during the lockdown?

I have kept in contact with friends and family, sharing our the experiences of quarantine. I have also maintained a daily working schedule and have taken online courses to distract myself from the tension.

What has been the hardest part of being in lockdown?

The uncertainty of when it would end, and the boredom related to the infinite lockdown period.

What advice would you give to people about Coronavirus?

You should be vigilant and take personal responsibility not to become a victim of the virus.

You should prepare yourself for a challenging time, and adjust your daily life accordingly by presuming that the lockdown could last for months.

Make sure you keep yourself occupied by doing meaningful things instead of being overwhelmed by the psychological effects of the virus.

And try and keep your head clear not to be manipulated by rumours.
